POLONEZ
POLONEZ fellowship "Compressed sensing and quantum many-body physics" (Agreement No. UMO-2015/19/P/ST2/03001).

One of the first POLONEZ fellowships was awarded by the National Research Centre to Dr. Martin Kliesch for the project "Compressed sensing and quantum many-body physics" (Agreement No. UMO-2015/19/P/ST2/03001). Together with the research partner Prof. Michał Horodecki, the project is carried out at National Quantum Information Centre of University of Gdańsk. The two-year project started on December 1st, 2016 and ends on November 30,2018. The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 665778.

The research project covers three topic areas:
1. Compressed sensing,
2. Open quantum systems and
3. Quantum thermodynamics.

In the young research field of compressed sensing, on is able to reconstruct "signals" from very little measured data. The signal can be a lot of different things, such as a picture, as sound wave or a quantum state. The key idea of compressed sensing is to exploit that realistic signals can typically be compressed (similar to zip file compression). Compressibility is also exploited in the theory of complex quantum systems. Here, the project will use the underlying powerful ideas of compressed sensing for the development of new simulation techniques for open quantum systems. Moreover, the underlying techniques will be used to gain new insights on how quantum states with a well-defined temperature arise in nature, which is an important question in quantum thermodynamics. Conversely, insights from quantum many-body physics will be used to extend results from compressed sensing to new types of measurements and new classes of signals.
